Serhat Kerakas is one of a team of volunteers who provide support in the oncology unit and on the concierge desk at Chase Farm Hospital.

Serhat started volunteering with us in July 2023.

Explaining his motivation for volunteering, Serhat said: I wanted to give back to the community and support patients during what can be a challenging time.”

The opportunity to work directly with patients and make a tangible difference to their experience was something that greatly appealed to me.

Patients receiving cancer treatment at Chase Farm Hospital can take part in a range of immersive experiences using simulator headsets, including tranquil forest walks and deep-sea diving.

The virtual reality therapy for patients is funded by the Royal Free Charity and delivered by a specially trained team of volunteers.

Serhat is one of the volunteers who has been introducing patients to the transformative potential of the new technology, ensuring that the experience is both enjoyable and safe.

Serhat has been volunteering at Chase Farm Hospital since 2023

His interest in volunteering stems from a keen interest in healthcare innovation.

Serhat said: We are starting to see virtual reality be used for more things and using it in healthcare seemed like a great idea.”

It is a different way of helping the mind escape.

Serhat has completed a MSc in Experimental Pharmacology and Therapeutics.

He added: I am interested in drug development and discovery; I enjoy being proactive. The world is forever evolving, and we can never know what is on the horizon.

I think we saw that with the Covid-19 pandemic. Anything we can do to be prepared for the future will make a difference and innovation is a part of that.”

Speaking about his love of biomedical science, Serhat said: I have always been passionate about the medical field and patient care.

My background in science gave me a good understanding of the importance of a supportive and caring environment for patients undergoing treatment.”

What does Serhat enjoy about the role?

I enjoy the interactions with both the patients and the staff.

The team at Chase Farm Hospital is incredibly dedicated and supportive, and it’s rewarding to be part of such a compassionate group.

Seeing the positive impact, we have on patients’ experiences, whether through a simple chat or the use of VR, makes the role very fulfilling.”
