Royal Free Charity | Grant funding

Grant funding

We invest millions in grant funding each year to support our hospitals to go further, faster, for all.

Thanks to the generosity of our supporters, our grants programme ensures Royal Free London staff and researchers can do more than the NHS could do alone.

We award over 40 grants each year under four themed areas: clinical services, patient experience, research and staff experience.

Grants rounds 2024/25

Patient experience grants

The patient experience grant round is now closed. Applicants will be notified of the outcome by the end of December 2024.

Applications must demonstrate that they will improve patient treatment and care or the services provided, leading to enhanced service delivery and clinical outcomes.

A key factor is patient involvement through engagement in the identified projects.

Projects may include use of innovative equipment and/or a new initiative.

£40,000 is available with bids allowed up to £10,000.

Improved gym facilities

We awarded a £9,000 grant for enhancements to the Royal Free Hospital’s therapies department, so that therapists can deliver more specialised and personalised treatments through upgraded therapeutic gym facilities.

Research grants

The research grant round is now closed. Applicants will be notified of the outcome by the end of March 2025.

Our research grants scheme provide support to researchers to:

  • undertake proof-of-concept studies
  • generate the pilot data for larger grant applications
  • develop a new cross-disciplinary collaboration
  • support innovative early-stage research.

Research grants can include any relevant biomedical research that is aligned with the Royal Free London’s clinical priorities.
