Grant funding

We invest millions in grant funding each year to support our hospitals to go further, faster, for all.

Thanks to the generosity of our supporters, our grants programme ensures Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust staff and researchers can do more than the NHS could do alone. 

Grants rounds 2025/26

Patient and public involvement and engagement grants (PPIE)

The patient and public involvement and engagement (PPIE) grant is now open until March 2026. 

This scheme will support researchers to involve patients and the public in shaping their projects. Funding will be available to undertake a variety of PPIE-related activities. This could include holding focus groups to develop ideas, running an engagement event, or undertaking surveys and interviews with people with lived experience. 

Applicants can apply for up to £500 and for up to six months.

Diabetes Research grants (open)

The diabetes research grant round is now open until October 2025. 

This scheme will support researchers to undertake pilot projects in any area of diabetes research. This could include access to healthcare and health inequalities, co-morbidities, research innovation or developing a new collaboration. 

Applications must align with the trust’s research and development strategy. Applicants will also be asked to identify an appropriate mentor to support them with delivery of the project. 

Up to three projects will be awarded and applicants can apply for up to £65,000. 

Application development support grants (open)

The application development support grant round is now open until December 2025.

This scheme will support individuals from clinical backgrounds who are getting started in their research career. The funding will enable successful applicants to spend one day a week of dedicated research time to develop a research application to a funder. The funding can also be used to access any required training or other research support. 

Applicants can apply for up to £10,000 and for up to six months. 

Patient experience grants (closed)

Our patient experience grant round closed on 7 August 2025, we will be informing applicants of outcomes late October 2025.

Research grants (closed)

Our research grant round closed on 21 August 2025, we will be informing applicants of outcomes late November 2025.
