Volunteering roles:

Wards - supporting the housekeeper and mealtimes and providing patient companionship. Daily (am/​pm plus evenings).

Meet and greet – we are recruiting volunteers to cover two charity desks on the ground and second floors of Barnet Hospital. As a volunteer you will be a point of contact for hospital visitors who need support in locating a department and assistance with general enquires. 

Dementia companions – volunteering on the wards supporting patients with dementia, including helping to host social tea parties (Tea with Doris) and entertainment for patients and distribute materials about dementia to staff and visitors. 

Emergency department volunteers – navigating patients around the hospital and providing patient companionship. If you would like to be volunteer at the paediatrics A&E- there will be an additional element of cleaning toys and engaging children with play. 

Patient partners  – asking patients about their experience of the hospital service, recording feedback for the Patient Experience Team to make improvements in the hospital service. 

Arts volunteer - working with patients with dementia and engaging them in different art based activities developed by the volunteer. 

Massage therapy volunteers – with relevant qualifications, our complementary therapy team require volunteer support in providing massage therapy to staff at Barnet hospitals. Monday-Friday.

Volunteer roles: 

Clinic Guider Support – supporting several day clinic staff by assisting patients to make sure that they are aware when they have been called in for appointments to help reduce delays to the service.

Meet and greet navigators – guiding people around the hospital to locate their appointments.

Refreshment volunteer, chemotherapy suite – making cups of tea, coffee, instant soup for patients, chatting to patients.

VR headset pilot for cancer patients – helping fit the headsets, choose a relevant programme, collect feedback for the project team.

Patient partners – asking patients about their experience of the hospital service, recording feedback for the patient experience team to make improvements in the hospital service.

Music and art volunteers – you could perform at the hospital to play for patients, staff and visitors on a regular basis, helping provide them with some joy and comfort during a potentially stressful time, or take part in arts and crafts with patients.

Gardening volunteers – we’re looking for experienced gardeners to help maintain the gardens and engage the patients in gardening at Edgware Community Hospital neurological rehabilitation centre.

Patient partners – asking patients about their experience of the hospital service, recording feedback for the Patient Experience Team to make improvements in the hospital service.

Volunteer roles:

Meet and greet – volunteers are needed to help direct patients to their clinic appointments and to collect patient feedback surveys. 

VR headsets in the chemotherapy suite – we are introducing VR therapy to help patients who are receiving chemotherapy infusions. Volunteers are needed to assist patients to use the VR headsets and record patient feedback. 

Administration volunteers – are needed to get in touch with patients to remind them to attend clinic appointments.

Volunteer roles:

Shop trolley – our volunteers work in pairs, visiting wards and selling items to patients and staff. Monday to Friday, morning/​afternoon.

Emergency department meet and greet navigators – providing support by answering patient and visitor enquires and giving directions, as well as promoting our news and fundraising opportunities. Monday to Friday, morning/​afternoon.

Infant feeding support – supporting new mums and infant feeding. Training and support will be provided. Daily, morning/​afternoon. Must have experience/​IBCLC (International Board Certified Lactation Consultants) or similar qualifications.

Massage therapy volunteers – with relevant qualifications, our complementary therapy team require volunteer support in providing massage therapy to patients and staff. Monday to Friday.

Young volunteers aged 16 to 21

We are pleased to confirm that applications will be open for one week: starting 9am, 5 January and closing at 9am on 12 January 2026.

We anticipate a high demand for these roles. To give yourself the best chance, please submit your application in good time, as we reserve the right to close the window early if we receive a large number of responses. 

Our young volunteers gain interpersonal skills and confidence in the workplace. They also interact and connect with people in the wider community during the course of their placements.

Many of our volunteers are keen to pursue careers in the healthcare sector, while others want to give back to their local hospital. Whatever the reason, all participants will gain access to training and development opportunities provided by the Royal Free London and the charity.

We’re incredibly grateful for the enthusiasm so many young people have shown in wanting to volunteer with the Royal Free Hospital – it’s been truly inspiring to see such interest and passion.
