Research application grant guidance

Application guidance for £10,000 research grants

Thank you for taking the time to read this guidance. We want to support you to put in the best application possible and ensure you are applying for the relevant themed grant round.

Introduction

Our vision is for everyone served by the Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust (RFL) to have access to world-leading healthcare, delivered by a thriving workforce and driven by medical research that has a global impact. We support the 10,000 staff of the RFL and their 1.6 million patients across Barnet, Chase Farm and Royal Free hospitals and more than 30 NHS services.

Through the services we provide, and the programmes and equipment we fund, we make a profound and immediate difference to patients’ experiences of care. Our volunteering, support hub, and complementary therapy teams enhance the hospital journey for all patients – whether they live locally or come from further away to access the trust’s specialist services.

Our support of the RFL workforce enables staff to perform at their very best. Spanning individual professional development and training through to organisation-wide interventions, our initiatives bolster employee resilience and mental health so staff can achieve the best outcomes for patients. We fund ground-breaking research with the potential to change people’s lives, whether it’s through our grants programme or delivering major capital funding appeals. We also support early career researchers through our PhD funding programme.

Remit of the scheme

This scheme will support research projects up to £10,000 and for up to 1 year. The projects must align with the trust’s R&D strategy

The scheme aims to provide support to researchers to undertake proof of concept studies or generate the pilot data for larger grant applications, develop a new cross-disciplinary collaboration or support innovative early-stage research. Research grants can include any relevant biomedical research that is aligned with the trust’s clinical priorities.

Projects should have strong potential for future patient benefit. Applications should demonstrate the potential impact that could be made with the funding available. Applicants should describe any links between this proposal and their other projects, and explain the specific benefits achieved by this funding.

Early career researchers are particularly encouraged to apply.

Application Assessment

Applications will be assessed by the Royal Free Charity Research Review Panel against the following criteria:

  • Alignment with the RFL R&D strategy
  • Importance – the research need
  • Research design and methodology – sound methodological approaches
  • Feasibility – realistic objectives delivered within the timescale and budget
  • Potential impact for patients – potential to deliver the eventual outcomes for patients
  • Value for money – reasonable and justifiable costs

All applications must demonstrate how they align to the trust’s 5‑year R&D strategy and areas of clinical priority. The three main group priorities are cancer, cardiovascular and organ failure/transplantation. Research applications that do not demonstrate clear alignment with the clinical priorities must demonstrate relevance to another area of clinical importance to RFL. All applications must be endorsed by the respective R&D clinical theme lead. Applicants should make initial contact with theme leads well in advance of submitting their application.

The R&D clinical themes are grouped by NIHR research divisions as below.

Theme 1 (NIHR Division 1)Professor Tim Meyer, [email protected]
Theme 2 (NIHR Division 2 & 4)Professor David Wheeler, [email protected]
Theme 3 (NIHR Division 3 & 5)Professor Pratima Chowdary, [email protected]
Theme 4 (NIHR Division 6)Professor Emmanouil Tsochatzis, [email protected]
Barnet and CF based researchersDr Ameet Bakhai, [email protected]
North mid based researchersDr Jeronimo Moreno Cuesta, [email protected]

Eligibility

The lead applicant will need to be employed by one of these organisations:

  • Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust
  • Faculty of Medical Sciences, University College London

If a fellowship or grant is funding the lead applicant’s salary, the lead applicant must have a co-applicant employed by one of the two organisations above. All lead applicants must be based at one of the two organisations above for the duration of the grant and the research must be primarily undertaken at the above organisations. Should the lead applicant move to another organisation during the grant period, the grant will not be portable and a new grantholder will need to be appointed with the approval of the charity.

Co-applicants and collaborators can be based outside of the two organisations above provided a justification is provided outlining their expertise.

Although PhD students are welcome to apply, the funding should be for a distinct project and not used to simply extend the applicant’s PhD studies.

How to apply

Applications must be received by 4pm on Thursday 21 August 2025. Applications submitted after this time will not be accepted. Applications must be sent to [email protected]. You must allow sufficient time to get the necessary approvals prior to submission.

Applications based at RFL, or with RFL costs, need to be checked by the trust R&D office and approved by the RFL R&D director prior to submission. To do this, please send your application to Jasmine Walker, [email protected] at least one week prior to the application deadline

The grants team are happy to answer any questions you may have about the application form or the scheme in general. If you have a query or would like to arrange a call with one of the team, please contact [email protected]

Additional guidance for applicants

In recent grant rounds, the panel has noted that unsuccessful applications often share some common issues. These areas are explained below. We encourage applicants to consider these areas while drafting their application.

Methodological detail

A common issue is applications that don’t include enough detail on their planned experiments, or include information that is unclear. Applicants should clearly explain the planned experiments including details like number of repeats or treatments. If the application is made-up of multiple work-packages, applicants should clearly explain how these link together and the planned sequence of the work.

Presenting preliminary data that led to the application is critical. This helps enable the panel to have an understanding of why the proposed work is needed and what led to it.

Statistical strength

A common issue is that applications are statistically underpowered. Applicants should include clear information on statistical aspects of their plans, such as sample numbers and validation of datasets. The information should be sufficiently detailed for the panel to make a judgement on the statistical robustness of the project. Applicants should include statistical justifications as part of their project plan, including power calculations where relevant.

Funding overlap

Sometimes it is not clear in applications what the relationship is between the proposed project and an applicant’s other active related work. If an application has significant overlap with an applicant’s active projects, or the alignment between projects is not clearly explained, the panel will not be clear on the project they are reviewing which may impact on their scoring .

Use of figures

Applicants are encouraged to make use of figures and diagrams to support the application. The research review panel are drawn from a wide range of fields, so the inclusion of good-quality figures to illustrate a project can strongly support an application.
