Artificial intelligence (AI) position statement

We accept applicants may be using AI tools to help draft their applications. Applicants and their host institutions are fully responsible for the accuracy, integrity and quality of their submissions.

We do not use AI to filter, score or assess grant applications. All decisions are made by trustees, staff and expert reviewers using human judgement.

For research applications peer reviewers and panel members must not use AI tools to review applications and provide written comments. This ensures confidentiality, protects intellectual property and maintains integrity.

We may use AI to support administrative tasks and to record panel meetings to capture panel discussions and to support the summarising of applicant feedback. AI generated outputs will always be reviewed by staff for accuracy.

We recognise that AI systems can reflect bias. We will not compromise our commitment to ensuring equity, diversity or inclusion.

We will be open about any use of AI within our processes. Where AI is used to support efficiency or learning, we will explain how and why.

Confidential or sensitive application data will not be entered into AI systems without appropriate safeguards. All use of AI complies with UK data protection law and our internal information security standards. 

We will use AI mindfully and only when it adds value. The charity will monitor environmental impact as part of its broader sustainability commitments.
