Artwork lights up Barnet Hospital

A stunning art installation that pays tribute to employees of the Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust has been unveiled at Barnet Hospital.

London-based artist Sandeep Bhikha created the artwork last year as an act of gratitude to all NHS staff and those on the frontline of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Entitled AM Shift PM, the artwork can be appreciated day and night with bespoke ultraviolet lighting effects to illuminate the piece from dusk till dawn. For designer and textile artist Sandeep, the UV light element represents the shift patterns of those fighting the pandemic round the clock.

“As the pandemic raged, I was drawn to the idea of creating something abstract for a hospital setting,” Sandeep explained. “It’s not a complicated piece of art: inspired by astrophysics (supernovas) I wanted to work with a simplicity that captivates and draws the viewer’s attention to the vibrancy of the colours emanating, represented by the precious and rare elements created at time of a supernova, especially gold which can only be formed at this moment in time in the universe”.

Barnet Hospital chief executive Deborah Sanders said: “We’re very grateful to Sandeep for donating such a unique work of art to us. The symbolism of the round-the-clock lighting is a touching reminder that throughout this pandemic, our staff never stopped. Every time I see Sandeep’s work, I will think of their dedication and their compassion with enormous pride.”

The location of the piece was chosen to ensure it could be viewed by staff working across a 24-hour rota at Barnet Hospital.

The installation was arranged by the Royal Free Charity which manages a collection of artwork across the Royal Free London sites.
