Head of grants and research

Salary – £48,000-£50,000 per annum – subject to skills and experience.

37.5 hours a week over five days.

Base – initially home working then office based at the Royal Free Hospital, Hampstead.

The Royal Free Charity stands at the threshold of its most important period of development. The pandemic has shown just how vital is its support for the staff and patients of our three hospitals across north London and our generous donors have never been more ready to enable us to provide it. The need for our support for globally-important research has also never been more clear.

We now need to expand the expertise within our grants team to ensure the money donated by our supporters is used to fund medical research with far-reaching impact as well as support patients and our hospital colleagues. This is your opportunity to drive the grants programme forward.

If you have the right experience to steer our medical research funding programme, and if you feel excited at the idea of enabling innovative research and a grants programme that can provide evidenced outcomes, we want to hear from you.

The head of grants and research will report to the director of grants and services and will be responsible for the grants administrator.

Main purpose of the role

  • Oversee the management of all grant applications to the Royal Free Charity
  • Develop a research grants programme aiming for membership of the Association of Medical Research Charities.
  • Review and refresh the management of special purpose funds and develop relationships with major fund holders.


28 days’ paid holiday plus UK bank holidays each year.
