Free workshop for writing better research grant applications
The workshop is aimed at early career researchers and those wishing to begin their research career journey, who are looking to build their track record and fund their independent research by winning their first research grant or fellowship.
No previous funding experience is required.
About the workshop
The workshop will cover how to turn ideas into a written research proposal that is interesting and easy for reviewers to understand. Throughout the day, real examples will be used for participants to critique and to complement the theory. The course also covers a host of practical points from budgeting to brainstorming tools to the professional writing cycle, including how to efficiently edit and proofread your own work to a high standard.
Learning outcomes
By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:
- understand the proposal review process and the reviewing audience
- effectively manage a collaborative proposal writing process
- understand the requirements for each section of a proposal
- understand the key differences between criteria for fellowships and research grants
- write a convincing research vision that links to feasible impact
- organise a logical project approach that conveys clear methods and concrete outputs
- draft a compelling and concise proposal abstract and text
- refine ideas and writing for a lay audience
Format
The workshop will be a one-day, in-person session for 20 participants.
Scriptoria courses are highly interactive and combine presentations, group discussions and participant-led paired exercises.
All participants receive a comprehensive set of course notes, templates and tools to complement the course.

Places will be awarded on a first come first serve basis. There will also be a waiting list available should any participants drop out. The workshop is only open to Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust staff who are early career researchers or are about to begin a research career.
The workshop will take place on Monday 16 June 2025 at 9:30am – 4:30pm at the UCL Institute of Immunity and Transplantation, Pears Building. Tea and coffee will be provided, but please note lunch is not included.
The workshop is free to attend.
