Winter appeal

Will you help patients through their most difficult moments this winter?

For many, a visit to the hospital is routine. But for others, it marks the start of some of the most challenging moments of their lives. From hearing a life-altering diagnosis to facing the uncertainty of intensive care, patients across our local hospitals are experiencing anxiety and loneliness every day.

At the Royal Free Charity, we work alongside our amazing NHS colleagues to help make these tough moments more bearable for patients at Barnet, Chase Farm and the Royal Free hospitals.

Our dedicated teams of volunteers, support advisors and massage therapists bring kindness, comfort and practical help to patients when they need it most.

This winter, you can help us keep these vital services running:

  • £20

could fund an hour of volunteer support for a new parent struggling to feed their newborn.

  • £36

could provide massage for a patient in intensive care.

  • £50

could help a patient facing financial challenges because of their illness or condition.

Kristen, massage therapist

Sometimes you can put your hand on a patient’s shoulder and they just melt, and they’ll smile when they haven’t smiled for days or weeks. It’s just like a superpower. We feel very privileged to help patients.”

With the help of our supporters, we work alongside NHS staff to provide the extra support that can make all the difference. Our unique services include:

  • volunteers offering companionship to patients feeling isolated
  • massage therapy for those enduring long treatments
  • music performances and therapy dogs who bring joy to hospital wards
  • practical financial advice for those facing an uncertain future following a life-changing diagnosis or chronic illness.

Dr Kate Mahoney, clinical psychologist

If someone comes in and is so distressed about not being able to pay their rent or pay off a debt that they were managing until their injury, it can consume them in a way that then prevents them from thinking about their recovery.”
